Carta Aromatica d’Eritrea was created in 1927 by Dr. Vittoriano Casanova, a pharmacist in Piacenza, who, after over three years of research, produced an aromatic medicinal paper that could persistently fragrance rooms through fumigation.

Since then, Carta Aromatica d’Eritrea has been made using the same formula, composed of a blend of over 30 natural essential oils—the majority of which are of African and Asian origin—musks, and resins. To this day, the latter are still pulverized by hand in a mortar and left to infuse for weeks in pure alcohol. The final mixture is used to soak sheets of blotting paper made of pure cellulose, and after drying, it is cut and die-cut to create the classic "booklets." The extraordinary fragrance of Carta Aromatica d’Eritrea, released by combustion, is achieved without the use of artificial colorings or fragrances synthesized in a laboratory. It is also excellent for repelling mosquitoes.
