What is Confetto Falqui C.M. 5 mg
PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC CATEGORY:
Drugs for constipation.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
Bisacodyl 5 mg.
EXCIPIENTS:
One coated tablet contains: microcrystalline cellulose, talc, starch, titanium dioxide, ethyl phthalate, sucrose, glycerol behenate, povidone, sorbitol, methacrylic acid copolymer, triethyl citrate, shellac, macrogol 6000, sepifilm 002.
INDICATIONS:
Short-term treatment of occasional constipation.
CONTRAINDICATIONS/SIDE EFFECTS:
Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
Laxatives are contraindicated in subjects with acute abdominal pain or pain of unknown origin, acute surgical abdomen, nausea or vomiting, intestinal obstruction or stenosis, rectal bleeding of unknown origin, severe dehydration, appendicitis, gastroenteritis.
Contraindicated in children under 3 years of age.
Generally contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Generally contraindicated in pediatric age.
DOSAGE:
Adults: 2 coated tablets per day; in particularly stubborn cases, 3 coated tablets.
Children: 1 - 2 coated tablets per day (0.3 mg/kg).
The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation of soft stools.
It is advisable to initially use the minimum doses provided.
When necessary, the dose can then be increased, but without ever exceeding the maximum indicated.
The coated tablets should be swallowed whole and should preferably be administered after the evening meal, so that the effect of the laxative, which occurs after 10 - 12 hours, does not disturb sleep.
Ingest with an adequate amount of water (a large glass).
A diet rich in liquids favors the effect of the medicine.
Laxatives must be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days.
Use for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case.
STORAGE:
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees C.
WARNINGS:
Abuse of laxatives can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutritional factors.
In more severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in case of simultaneous treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids.
Abuse of laxatives can cause dependence, chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony).
In children over 3 and under 12 years of age, the medicine can only be used after consulting a doctor.
Treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, prescription of drugs, and supervision during therapy.
Consult your doctor when the need for the laxative derives from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that has lasted for more than two weeks, or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects, or when the patient suffers from diabetes mellitus, hypertension, or heart disease.
It is also appropriate for elderly subjects or those in poor health to consult a doctor before using the medicine.
The use of laxatives in patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease or in the presence of abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting can be dangerous and therefore requires careful evaluation.
With the use of bisacodyl, cases of dizziness or syncope during defecation have been reported, consistent with defecation syncope (attributable to the effort of defecation itself) or with a vasovagal response to abdominal pain that may be associated with constipation.
Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this drug.
The coated tablets must be swallowed whole without chewing them.
Does not contain gluten.
INTERACTIONS:
Laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine, and therefore the absorption, of other drugs administered orally at the same time.
Therefore, avoid ingesting laxatives and other drugs simultaneously; after taking a medicine, allow an interval of at least two hours before taking the laxative.
Concomitant use of diuretics or corticosteroids may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance if bisacodyl is taken in excessive quantities.
Electrolyte imbalance can lead to an increased sensitivity to glycosides.
Milk or antacids can modify the effect of the medicine; allow an interval of at least one hour before taking the laxative.
SIDE EFFECTS:
The most commonly reported side effects are abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Immune system disorders: anaphylactic reactions, angioedema, and other hypersensitivity reactions.
Nervous system disorders: dizziness, syncope (the phenomena of dizziness and syncope that occur after taking bisacodyl appear to be attributable to a vasovagal response consequent to, for example, abdominal pain or bowel movement).
Metabolism and nutrition disorders: dehydration.
Gastrointestinal disorders: colitis, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, hematochezia (blood in the stool), abdominal discomfort, anorectal discomfort.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING:
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Therefore, the medicine should only be used in case of need, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after evaluating the expected benefit for the mother in relation to the possible risk to the fetus or infant.
